    Name: Sherry Xu

Position and Organization: President of OC Science

School: Troy High School, Grade 12

Three words that describe me are: dedicated, passionate, genuine

How long I have been in Math for Service: 3 years

About me: My participation in OCSEF is the biggest reason I am passionate about science today, so I love being able to give back by encouraging other students’ interests in science. I also love working with other Math for Service organizations to create events that explore the intersections of different subjects. I feel lucky to have so many opportunities where I can directly interact with all kinds of people in my community, learn from them, and be inspired by them. I’ve also learned the value of teamwork, as well as how to be a good leader and active citizen. I want to make fun science education accessible in diverse and underserved communities. I hope I can give younger students in my community an opportunity to learn a scientific way of thinking that they can use in their daily lives.

School: Woodbridge High School, Grade 12

Three words that describe me are: witty, creative, hardworking

How long I have been in Math for Service: 3 years

About me: Volunteering with Math for Service has been a significant part of my life because I enjoy having the opportunity to make a lasting impact on the community. Through Math for Service, I can help set kids up for the future and be a major part of the process. Through my work with Math for Service, I gained exposure to some of the interactions and work I may encounter in the future. I gained speaking skills, as well as coordination and management. One of the important aspects of Math for Service is working directly with kids to explain important concepts to them. My cherished moment is the “Aha” moment when a difficult concept suddenly becomes clear. Being able to leave with kids knowing more than they knew when they arrived is rewarding. Through my experience with OC Science, I have been fortunate enough to follow it journey in becoming an established organization. However, “Math for Service” is not a household phrase in Orange County. This year, I hope to be a part of designing new programs to make Math for Service an indispensable part of the community.

School: University High School, Grade 11

Three words that describe me are: curious, passionate, inclusive

How long I have been in Math for Service: 3 years

About me: I volunteer MfS due to my enormous passion for STEAM. I’m now serving as VP of School Chapters for the second year. I simply love contributing to the community. I’m especially rewarded for my efforts when I see the bright faces of children who discover new ideas at our events. MfS taught me how to be a better leader. Before, I was afraid to speak up in large crowds and allowed myself to be pushed around by my peers. Now, I am more confident when conveying my thoughts and how to make firm decisions while also respecting others’ opinions. MfS taught me how to be a better leader. Before, I was afraid to speak up in large crowds and allowed myself to be pushed around by my peers. Now, I am more confident when conveying my thoughts and how to make firm decisions while also respecting others’ opinions. I want to increase OC Science’s school chapters to have an impact on at least 20 high schools by the end of the year. I plan to organize new events to always bring innovation to the community. Finally, I want to volunteer as much as possible to help spread knowledge.

  • Michelle Xu +

    Name: Michelle Xu

Position and Organization: Vice President of Education of OC Science

School: Arnold O. Beckman High School, Grade 12

Three words that describe me are: Initiator, sociable, devoted

How long I have been in Math for Service: 4 years

About me: I have been passionate about science ever since I joined my school’s Science Olympiad team in seventh grade. This one opportunity shaped me into who I am today - a science enthusiast and avid researcher - and I want to give back to my community by providing opportunities for other students to experience science. I love volunteering in Math for Service because all the hard work we put in truly does make a difference: students who never conducted research before were able to complete their first project, and students who thought science only involved textbooks were able to experience hands-on activities. Throughout these years, I have learned how to be a proactive leader and valuable team player, and I hope to continue inspiring others in the upcoming year.

  • Maggie Zhang +

    Name: Maggie Zhang

Position and Organization: Vice President of Operations and OCSEF Liason of OC Science

School: University High School, Grade 11

Three words that describe me are: driven, curious, caring

How long I have been in Math for Service: 3 years

About me: MFS has such an enormous reach and influence to thousands of students in Orange County. I volunteer because I love being able to contribute to this community with likeminded individuals. Before volunteering, I was one of the shyest kids in my school, unable to talk to anyone I didn’t know. Through MFS, I’ve learned how to better communicate my thoughts in order to convey my ideas to other people and improve my leadership. I plan to increase overall event efficiency of events as VP of operations. I aim to clearly direct the webmaster and director of event logistics to allow for more informed and better planned events.
