Orange County Sheriff - Coroner Crime Lab – Wednesday, May 14, 2008

Teachers, this is your opportunity to drop your perceptions and misconceptions about forensics and crime labs from the popular CSI TV shows and see how the professional criminologists deal with crime evidence.   The Forensic Science Services Laboratory in the Sheriff - Coroner Department will open its doors for a tour of their nationally recognized laboratory. 
The Forensic Science Services Division (FSS) provides all public agencies in Orange County with services for the recognition, collection and evaluation of physical evidence from crime scenes. The FSS is the only full-service, internationally accredited laboratory providing forensic analyses to all law enforcement and fire protection agencies in Orange County.

The tour is limited to 20 teachers (no families).
Preference will be given to high school chemistry or biology teachers.
We will accept a waiting list if we do not reach our limit from the high school community.

The tour is free.  Parking in the structure adjacent to the lab is $5 to $6 .

Oak Canyon Nature Center is a 58-acre natural park nestled in the Anaheim Hills.  A year-round stream meanders through the park.  Consisting of three adjoining canyons, four miles of hiking trails traverse one of the few remaining areas of oak woodland and coastal sage scrub in our region.  Native wildlife make the canyon their home and is just waiting to be discovered.  Also located on site is the John J. Collier Interpretive Center, a small museum with live animal and regional natural history exhibits.
 
The Nature Center is ideal for those who are just stepping into the wilderness for the first time or for those more experienced trekkers who are seeking a short hike.
There is no eating on the grounds but there are picnic facilities available adjacent to the bathrooms and the parking lot.

Walnut Canyon Rd. in Anaheim.  From the 91 Freeway, exit Imperial Highway and go South.  At Nohl Ranch Road, turn left.  After passing the Anaheim Hills Golf Course, veer left onto Walnut Canyon Rd.  Free Parking is available in a parking lot located at the end of Walnut Canyon Rd. right near the entrance to the park.

The Newport Harbor Nautical Museum and their on-water-partner, Newport Landing Whale Watching, are offering a special opportunity for you to get acquainted with their unique marine and nautical educational experiences. You and a limited number of guests are welcome aboard for this enjoyable afternoon.

We would like you to meet us at the Museum at 1:15PM for a short introduction to the new location in the Balboa Fun Zone, resources and exciting educational experiences.
Your Newport Landing Whale Watching tour coincides with the prime Grey Whale migration period. Hundreds of Grey Whales are found along the Laguna Beach coastline and within minutes of Newport Harbor. You can also expect to see dolphins, sea lions, and marine birds.   Killer whales, sharks, and many other marine creatures may also be observed. Newport Landing’s whale watching cruises are a great experience for families with a universal appeal to all ages. Directions: Take the 55 Freeway South. The 55 Freeway becomes Newport Boulevard. Follow Newport Blvd, which becomes Balboa Blvd. when you enter the Balboa Peninsula. Follow the boulevard through the numbered cross streets, and then you will start crossing named streets. When you reach Palm (watch for Ferry signs), turn right, and park in the beach parking lot. Then walk back across Balboa Blvd toward the ferry landing and the Balboa Fun Zone. Notice the Ferris wheel and carousel. The Museum entrance is located on the carousel plaza.

Teachers, bring your families for a tour of the Pacific Marine Mammal Center and see how the staff rescue and rehabilitate seals and sea lions that are found ill or injured along Orange County beaches. View their wild patients and gain an appreciation for the beauty and amazing physiology of these local marine mammals. Find out how the Pacific Marine Mammal Center uses education and research to increase public awareness of the marine environment and let them be a resource for you!
Animals will be in residence!

Free Parking / Free Admission for Teachers and Their Families 
Directions: From the 405 or 5 freeways: Exit at the 133 south. Pass the lights at Laguna Canyon Road and the 73 freeway. We are just over one half mile past the stoplight at El Toro Road. Pull into the left turn lane when you see the signs for U-Haul self storage and Coastal Kennels. Our big red barn is on your left. Please park in the gravel lot next door.

From Laguna Beach: Take Broadway north (away from the beach). Broadway turns into Laguna Canyon Road. PMMC is on the right hand side about 2.5 miles from downtown. Our driveway is just beyond the dog park. Please park in the gravel lot.
